Gekkiyev was a Russian television journalist and news announcer. Later he became the anchorperson of TV program Vesti of the Kabardian VGTRK. Gekkiyev died a violent death, was killed by gunmen and most likely in retaliation for his work. He died on December 5, 2012 in the North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria.
